چکیده

1. Scope and objectives The scope of the preliminary design of the AO enclosure includes mating the AO bench correctly to the AO enclosure (including instruments) and conceptualizing the integration of all of the new and existing AO enclosure support systems, including electronics and controls, cable routing, the thermal management system, the air quality control system, and an infrastructure for a maintenance system. An analysis of the current and future utility requirements will also be made in order to identify any shortcomings for the new system. Lastly, since much of the infrastructure already exists, a portion of this design work was allotted towards identifying any interference that may require attention during the detailed design phase.

W. M. Keck Observatory Next-Generation Adaptive Optics Facility: Science Operations

The W. M. Keck Observatory is currently engaged in the conceptual design of a powerful new adaptive optics (AO) science capability providing precision AO correction in the near infrared (NIR) and visible and faint object multiplexed integral field spectroscopy. In this poster, we present the conceptual design of the Science Operations for this Next Generation Adaptive Optics (NGAO) facility. We...

Astronomical Science with Adaptive Optics at the W. M. Keck Observatory

The first refereed science papers based on data with the Keck II natural guide star (NGS) and laser guide star (LGS) adaptive optics (AO) system were published in 2000 January and 2005 May, respectively. As of the end of 2012 a total of 260 refereed science papers have been published based on Keck NGS AO data and 152 with the Keck LGS AO system. This paper provides an overview of the first doze...

Performance of the Keck Observatory adaptive-optics system.

The adaptive-optics (AO) system at the W. M. Keck Observatory is characterized. We calculate the error budget of the Keck AO system operating in natural guide star mode with a near-infrared imaging camera. The measurement noise and bandwidth errors are obtained by modeling the control loops and recording residual centroids. Results of sky performance tests are presented: The AO system is shown ...

Modeling low order aberrations in laser guide star adaptive optics systems.

When using a laser guide star (LGS) adaptive optics (AO) system, quasi-static aberrations are observed between the measured wavefronts from the LGS wavefront sensor (WFS) and the natural guide star (NGS) WFS. These LGS aberrations, which can be as much as 1200 nm RMS on the Keck II LGS AO system, arise due to the finite height and structure of the sodium layer. The LGS aberrations vary signific...

Characterization of adaptive optics at Keck Observatory: part II

This paper is a continuation of the characterization of adaptive optics (AO) at Keck Observatory (SPIE 516901). The bandwidth and measurement noise error terms are often the important sources of wave-front error. Here, we show how the magnitude of these two terms is estimated. First, the Bayesian wave-front reconstructor employed at Keck Observatory is presented and shown to perform better than...
